What do you want people to feel when they visit your website?

Before a potential client reads a single sentence on your website, they’re already feeling something. Your color palette, spacing, photos, and flow speak volumes about your practice long before your words do.

In the world of health and wellness, where safety, trust, and emotional resonance are everything, these design choices matter more than you might think.

Whether you're a therapist, naturopath, acupuncturist or other holistic nutritionist, your website is more than a brochure. It's a digital extension of your healing space. And every element, from your imagery to your navigation bar, either reinforces or disrupts the experience you want your clients to have.

Let’s explore some website design best practices for the health and wellness industry including the subtle but powerful ways your website communicates on your behalf, and how you can make sure it’s evoking the right feelings.

Design Speaks Without Words

Whitespace. Alignment. Simplicity. These are not just aesthetic preferences, they are tools that convey calm, professionalism, and clarity.

Cluttered pages or misaligned elements can subconsciously signal disorganization or overwhelm. And for many potential clients, especially those already feeling anxious or overstimulated, this can be a reason to click away.

Design tip: Think less is more. A few well-placed elements do more heavy lifting than a crowded page trying to say everything at once.

An intentional layout with breathing room (aka whitespace), clear visual hierarchy, and consistent spacing shows your site visitors that you value their time, respect their attention, and offer a grounded, organized approach to care.

Here is another great blog we wrote all about making your website feel like your approach to care: How to Make Your Holistic Health Website Feel Like Your In-Person Practice

Photos Set the Emotional Tone

We often say a photo is worth a thousand words... but in the health and wellness space, it may be worth even more.

The imagery you choose sends immediate emotional cues. Are you showing transformation or struggle? Hope or heaviness?

The goal isn’t to dismiss the challenges your clients face, but rather to gently guide them toward the feeling they want to have (not where they are now). Instead of focusing on pain or symptoms, opt for photos that reflect the outcome: groundedness, connection, confidence, peace, happiness.

Think less "anxious woman alone in a dark room," and more "smiling woman journaling with tea at sunrise."

For example, if you offer "anxiety therapy for women" you might be tempted to include a photo on your website of a women looking stressed or anxious (like the one below).

But instead of including photos of how your clients feel now, try to include photos of how they will feel after working with you, like the other photo below of the woman smiling.

Can you see how they both give off a very different vibe?

Your website becomes a mirror showing clients not where they are, but where they could be with your support.

Clean Navigation Creates Clarity & Builds Trust

When someone visits your site, they’re usually looking for clarity: Who are you? What do you offer? Can you help them?

A clean, intuitive navigation system helps them find answers without confusion. Consistency in fonts, colors, buttons, and page layouts reinforces a sense of professionalism and coherence.

Think of your website like a well-organized healing space. Just like you wouldn’t want your physical office cluttered or hard to navigate, your digital space should feel just as intentional and inviting.

Design tip: Stick to 4-6 main navigation items max. Keep language clear, kind, and action-oriented.

Visual Flow and the Power of Stillness

In a trend of flashy websites, movement, and animation, there is something deeply grounding about stillness.

This can work well for some industries, but for most health and wellness practitioners, we recommend using little to no animation at all. Why?

Because your audience, especially those navigating anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence, or chronic overwhelm, doesn’t need more stimulation. They need clarity. Calm. Spaciousness.

Static sites win here when it comes to accessibility!

Overuse of animation can distract the eye, interrupt the flow, and even trigger discomfort. A gentle, static layout gives the nervous system a break and invites a slower, more connected interaction with your content.

Design tip: Let movement be minimal and meaningful, like a soft hover effect or a gentle button glow. Avoid pop-ups, auto-play videos, or fast sliders.

Make Your Website Feel Like a Sanctuary

Remember that your website is part of your practice. It’s not separate from the healing work you do, it's the first step of it... and often the very first interaction someone has with your practice. Before they book a session or even send a message, they’re “meeting you” online.

A good website isn’t just informative. It’s a reflection of your care, your values, and it makes people feel something.

When a potential client lands on your site, they are asking:

“Can I trust this practitioner?”

“Will I feel safe here?”

"Does their approach align with my values and goals?"

“Does this person/practice truly understand what I need?”

Intentional design helps you answer yes to their questions and helps them feel like they're in the right place, even before they read a single word.

So take look at your website with fresh eyes, and ask yourself: Is my website aligned with how I want people to feel when they enter my space?

If not, it might be time for a thoughtful refresh. We would love to support you and help you decide if it's time for a redesign. You can reach out here!
